WorkersFirst Tax Summary
Independent contractor
As a healthcare professional picking up shifts through WorkersFirst, you are an independent contractor.
This means that when tax season comes around, you are responsible for filing your taxes for income earned as an independent contractor, including remitting your HST and CPP amounts.
HST is not deducted from your pay. After each shift, you can see a full breakdown of your earnings, including how HST and CPP amounts are calculated.
If you have maxed out your CPP contributions in a tax year, some or all of your CPP contributions from earnings at WorkersFirst may form a portion of your tax refund at the end of the year.
We understand that sometimes folks might forget to set aside the amounts that we need to remit for HST and CPP contributions (it happens to the best of us!). To help healthcare professionals avoid spending the tax and CPP amounts before tax season, WorkersFirst holds on to HST and CPP amounts and sends them in a one-time payment before tax season with a tax summary document to make it easier to file your taxes. Just send the tax summary to your tax advisor who is filing your return and they will take it from there. If you would like to opt out of HST and CPP withholdings, let us know any time at contact@keepworkersfirst.com.
Having an HST number lets you file expenses for tax refunds that you wouldn’t have if you didn’t have an HST number as an independent contractor. While not the full list of expenses that can be used in tax savings, here are some expenses that can be filed as business expenses for tax refunds if you have an HST number:
Your mobile phone bill - you use your mobile phone to pick up shifts, part of your phone bill may be included
Your car mileage - if you drive to work, part of your car mileage may be included
Your public transit fare - if you take public transit, part of your fare may be included
