How to get your HST number

Follow the instructions below to register for a HST number. It takes a few minutes to complete and you’ll have your HST number instantly.

1. Go to https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/registering-your-business/bro-register.html and click the ‘Register Now’ button.

2. On the first few screens you’ll confirm your personal information and accept a disclaimer. The personal information you enter must match the information on your last personal tax return.

3. Registration requirements: If you don’t already have a business number, select ‘I need a business number’.

4. Business type: Select ‘Business-Sole Proprietorship’.

5. Register client: In the ‘Add owner:’ section, add your information. The owner is you—the healthcare worker of your contractor services.

6. Legal name: The legal name is the same as the owner name (provided on the previous screen).

7. Business activity: Enter ‘Healthcare contractor service’ as the major activity of this business. Leave the remaining fields blank.

8. Confirm your details and you will receive a summary with a nine-digit number. This is your Business Number (BN).

9. Your HST number is the 9-digit Business Number, followed by RT0001.
